What each level must prove

Senior

Accountable for the quality of the team's deals as well as its people: pipeline, qualification, win rates and deal strategy.

You still run people practices, but at higher standards, and you now spend much time inside deals: grading opportunities, unblocking stalled ones and learning from wins and losses. Compared with mid-level, you shape how the team sells and not only how it is managed.

Study trail for this level: Sales Manager (First-Line)

  • One-on-One Coaching

Why: You coach through different rep profiles, including the high performer who resists feedback, and adapt your one-on-ones so each rep keeps improving.

  • Skill Development Planning

Why: You build development plans across the whole team from patterns in deal data, and make sure practice sticks beyond a single coaching session.

  • Territory Assignment & Design

Why: You redesign territories when segments or headcount change and manage the equity between reps, so reassignments do not cost you a top seller.

  • Quota Allocation

Why: You adjust quotas mid-year for ramping reps and territory changes, keeping the total on target without making individual numbers feel arbitrary.

  • Sales Hiring & Candidate Assessment

Why: You check which hires actually succeeded and stayed, and use that to refine the profile and interview process, not just fill open seats.

  • Onboarding Programs & First 90 Days

Why: You adjust the onboarding structure using ramp results, such as time to first deal, so each new cohort gets productive faster than the last.

  • Performance Discussions & Feedback

Why: You hold performance reviews that separate skill problems from effort or market problems, so feedback to each rep targets the real cause.

  • Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs)

Why: You tell early whether a plan will work, and handle the difficult exit decisions firmly and fairly, with the rest of the team watching how you do it.

  • Activity Tracking & Leading Indicators

Why: You tune activity targets to what truly predicts closed deals on your team, and stop dashboards from rewarding busy work with no outcome.

  • Win/Loss Analysis

Why: You review closed deals for patterns, such as losing to one competitor at a given stage, and share findings that change how the team sells.

  • Opportunity Grading & Qualification

Why: You apply a qualification framework to cut bloated pipeline and teach reps to qualify out early, so the forecast stops carrying deals that will not close.

  • Pipeline Coaching & Deal Strategy

Why: You help a rep with a stalled large deal by finding the missing stakeholder or next step, instead of only asking for a close date.
