What each level must prove

Mid-level

Accountable for building the basic protections into a service so a failing dependency does not take it down.

You now implement timeouts and circuit breakers, size capacity before a launch and make sure long-running services do not leak resources. Compared with junior, you fix the weakness instead of only describing it.

Study trail for this level: Release Engineering & Production Stability

  • Integration Points

Why: You can audit a service for every outbound call and decide which ones need protection before a launch, rather than discovering them during an outage.

  • Fault-Failure Chain

Why: You can place a safeguard where it breaks the chain, for example validating bad input early so a latent bug never becomes a user-facing failure.

  • Cascading Failure

Why: You can design a service so that a failing downstream degrades one feature rather than the whole checkout flow, and prove it in a failure test.

  • Slow Responses

Why: You can find the slow dependency behind a rising latency alert and decide to fail fast or serve a fallback instead of letting requests queue.

  • Timeouts

Why: You can set a timeout on every outbound call and pick a value from observed latency, so threads are freed without cutting off healthy slow requests.

  • Circuit Breaker

Why: You can add a circuit breaker around a flaky payment or search API so the service stops hammering it and recovers when the dependency does.

  • Steady State

Why: You can find what accumulates in a long-running service, such as logs, sessions or temp files, and add the cleanup so it does not need a manual restart.

  • Capacity Planning

Why: Before a marketing launch you can estimate the bottleneck and the headroom needed, so traffic growth does not push the system past its breaking point.
